Possibly one of the most fun things about being pregnancy is the hormonal acne. There’s nothing more exciting than experiencing your baby growing inside you and mountains of pus growing on your face.
To make it even more fun, it is next to impossible to find treatments that are deemed pregnancy safe. Of course what is ‘pregnancy safe’ is totally up to you and your doctor, but the consistent advice is avoid vitamin A. I am also avoiding Salicylic Acid as the jury is still out on that one. So with the two best acne fighting ingredients on the sidelines and my acne raging like I’m a teenager again, where do we go? Enter Medik8. Medik8 has a range of pregnancy safe treatments that target inflammation to reduce acne and keep the skin hydrated.
If you’ve experienced hormonal acne before you know how angry and irritated it can be, so finding products to calm the skin is essential. I’ve been cleansing with the Red Alert Calming Cleanser. Red Alert is soap and sulphate free and doesn’t contain any exfoliants or AHAs. Organic sweet orange oil helps to reduce inflammation while redness and sensitivity is reduced by patented anti redness ingredient, Teprenone.
I’ve been using the antioxidant rich, beta AOX Oil Free Serum every morning to protect my skin against pesky free radicals and encourage my skin to heal itself quicker. The oil free nature of this formula makes it ideal for hormonal acne. Niacinamide is an anti inflammatory super hero and will help to protect the barrier of the skin while Beta-Glucan promotes cell repair.
To hydrate and nourish the skin at night I’ve been treating my skin to Hydr8 B5 Skin Rehydration Serum. As the name suggests, this guy is loaded with vitamin B5 which improves the skin’s capacity to retain moisture and encourages skin regeneration. This is coupled with 4% hyaluronic acid to keep the skin hydrated and protected. Hydr8 B5 has a light gel serum texture and whilst relieving the skin of dehydration, doesn’t feel heavy on the skin.
I’ve topped off these serums both morning and night with beta Moisture Skin Balancing Mattifying Moisturiser. Oil free hydation perfect for acne ridden skin. Lauric Acid fights bacteria while cinnamon extract regulates oil production. One unique aspect of this moisturiser is the inclusion of pre and probiotics. These help to balance the skin’s bacteria levels and reduce bacteria that causes breakouts. beta Moisture is a super light weight lotion and has a faint orange scent.
So how did this regime pan out?
Pretty well thanks. While I don’t feel you can rid yourself of acne while hormones are the cause (and while your pregnant those hormone aren’t going anywhere!), this regime certainly told my skin to calm the f down. The affected areas of my skin (chin, jaw and neck) aren’t as sore and the redness has certainly been reduced. I’ve noticed my acne is less cystic which makes it a bit easier to put up with.
Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you have to give up good skincare. There are results driven, cosmeceutical products that are totally pregnancy safe and can help treat the fun changes your hormonal skin is going through. Medik8 is a great place to start. Obviously check everything you’re using with your doctor because every pregnancy is different and they know best.
